I'm going to make a prediction.
The GOP is a dead party. They've taken several positions which undermine their future in politics, and they are becoming increasingly marginalized by appealing to the far-right and voters over 65, rather than by embracing progressive platforms and positions that would appeal to younger voters under 65. As a result, the GOP has no long term future in politics.
However, we have a two party system. I don't expect that to change - even in the event that the GOP is no more. So whats the new second party?
The so-called "Blue Dogs".
The Blue Dogs are currently a powerful, fiscally conservative group of Democrats. There's enough of them to influence the outcome of legislation. Without the support of Blue Dogs, the Democrats have trouble passing any legislation including the current health care reform.
I suspect thats not going to change. In fact, I expect the Blue Dogs are going to become a stronger and stronger force in politics - at a time when the GOP is going to suffer and become marginalized while the nation will be put through increasingly difficult financial stresses.
Eventually, the Blue Dogs will emerge as the NEW second party, as the GOP loses its ability to elect a candidate. It won't happen over night. It's probably going to take 10 to 15 years.
However, do we really want a second party called the "Blue Dogs". Is that the political system we want to talk about for the next 100 years, the Democrats vs the "Blue Dogs"?
We need to come up with a better name for these guys. They can use a blue dog for their mascot if they want - but please call yourselves something reasonable. The "Fiscocrats" or even the "Spendinators". Just don't make me talk about Blue Dogs for the next 100 years.
Any other suggestions?
